Surveillance

Every year a report is published in which data of ongoing human surveillance on antibiotic use and resistance in the Netherlands are presented (NethMap). Since 2012 the data on veterinary antibiotic use and resistance are published as well (MARAN).

The SWAB is involved in the surveillance of antibiotic use and the resistance in several microorganisms. In some European countries, bacterial resistance is such a common occurrence that the usual antibiotics can no longer be prescribed in cases of serious infection. There are big differences between countries, as is shown by the European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Network (EARS-Net). When it comes to antibiotic use, there are also big differences between European countries. This is evident from the European Surveillance of Antimicrobial Consumption (ESAC).
